"Short Report " - new works from seven young artists:

August 5 - September 10 at CAAW, Beijing

Although "avant-garde arts" have been frequently and widely published in fashionable media, the number of opportunities for young artists to show their work still remain very limited and while many professionals already have posed incisive criticism to large international art exhibitions, at the same time, numerous artists are urgently waiting to show their works. The art world continually tends to adjust itself to keep in step with the latest current. Looking for new faces and agitating the current trends are the most common and safe ways. They are in fact similar to upholding old authorities in an existing system. However promoting new art is not only a moral obligation to progressive people, but also a task for concerned institutions. Young artists outside the more international oriented cities like Beijing and Shanghai hope to put their works in a more open cultural atmosphere, and to get feedback from experienced audiences. This is a simple idea, but it needs courage to realize. In this exhibition I selected eight, rather young, artists - however young age is not the key point as long as there are so many of them. So the selection of the works was obvious a subjective and limited one, that's why: "Short Report". Most of the works in the exhibition are oil paintings and no description can replace an actual confrontation with the works. I'm not able to produce a macro-theoretical or academic commentary; the contents of my art critical language warehouse is rather limited, it just contains some words like: "good, not bad, interesting!"; "so, so" or "not good, not interesting". "Good, not bad, interesting!" is just my comment on the works and has therefore been the reason why I have chosen these artists. Wang Xingwei, Haicheng, 2000
