Over There

As with my previous works, these recent works lack a consistent visual appearance, and if they seem to be somewhat new in conception, this is because the flavour of the times is somewhat diluted ? or to put it another way, the works have less of a sense of the times. These paintings may appear a little old-fashioned, coarse and disorderly, but it cannot be said that they have been cobbled together by borrowing a bit here and a bit there, arbitrarily following convenience. I have my personal objectives and reasons for approaching my work in this way, and to put it simply, the thing that has always drawn me to painting is the attempt to grasp a perceptible painting consciousness, a kind of painting consciousness that grows from my life experiences and my understanding of painting.

The way I see it, painting does not have to come to a halt in front of manner and style; it can dispense with manner and style, and can do without symbolic markings. Painting can also adopt an approach of serving the state of Qin in the morning and the state of Chu in the evening ? i.e. quickly changing sides ? in order to reveal its true feelings and say what it needs to say. It can even become disorganised, shoddy and deliberately court failure; of course, the ultimate aim of this kind of approach is to enrich the provocative nature of painting. Painting should provoke ingrained habits of knowledge and understanding, provoke those things that invade human consciousness and assume a rigid orderliness, provoke the quiet, refined character and good girl temperament that painting displays in both exhibition hall and living room.

All those who are dissatisfied with reality must come up with a solution; this philosophy, verging on simple candour, is also applicable to painters. Painting, after all, is extremely simple and honest work.
